Church (in Ruins)

St Colman Ban may have founded an early church here and he is commemorated on the 19th October (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 244-5). A late medieval nave (L c. 11.1m, Wth c. 6.6m) and chancel (L c. 6.55m, Wth c. 4.5m, wall T c. 1.4m) church built of rough limestone blocks randomly coursed. The E window has been replaced by a modern entrance. The original doorway was possibly in the S wall. Plain rectangular window in W gable. The nave and chancel are divided by a segmental rounded arch (Wth c. 2.4m) and the interior of the nave is 1.2m lower than that of the chancel. All visible headstones in surrounding irregularly shaped graveyard, postdate 1700. The church at Kilcolmanbane was founded by St Colman Ban, with its medieval remains dating to the late Middle Ages; dedicated to St Colman Ban, it reflects the early Christian tradition in the region and is associated with a 10th or 11th-century saint.
