Church (in ruins)

On the highest point of Church Island, which lies c. 200m offshore at the N end of Lough Derg. The island was probably once part of the demesne lands of the ruined 19th-century house (GA126-052----) located on the mainland, c. Ikm to the NNE. This church (9.2m E-W; 5.35m N-S; wall T 0.85m), which is poorly preserved, is constructed of a mixture of large and small randomly coursed and mortared limestone. Apart from a few dressed and squared quoinstones on the SW and NW corners, no other dressed stonework is visible. The N and S side-walls, and the W gable survive but only the central section of the E gable (L 1.3m; H 1.2m) is standing. A gap (Wth 1.7m) in the S wall marks the location of the doorway. Traces of a robbed-out window are visible to its E. The masonry and surviving quoinstones suggest a late medieval date. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 March 2020
