Church (in Ruins)

Situated towards the bottom of a S-facing slope overlooking the E end of Lough Gill. This is probably an estate church attached to Parke's Castle (LE010-037---), which is c. 140m to the S. This is a rectangular stone structure (int. dims 12.1m E-W; 5.9m N-S) built of coarse mortared limestone masonry (Wth 0.6m; H 2-3m) with dressed quoins which survives fairly complete, except for the W wall (H 0.7m). There is a destroyed window and a destroyed doorway in the S wall. There are plain limestone grave-markers within the church, but there is no evidence of burial in the overgrown rectangular field (dims 38m N-S; 18m E-W) attached to the N, which may have served as a graveyard. There is a record of a headstone commemorating the Parke family and dated 1677 (FitzGerald 1910-12) which cannot now be found. Archaeological testing (07E0042) c. 25m to the W produced no related material (Henry 2010).
