What is recorded here

Located at the N end of a short N-S ridge. St. Mochonóg is thought to have founded an early church at Kilmuckridge (Ranson 1948 100-01), but this is likely to be the church in Killincooley (WX028-003001-). The site of the parish church of Kilmuckridge is within D-shaped graveyard (dims. c. 45m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by a masonry wall. According to a Visitation by Thomas Ram, the Protestant bishop of Ferns, in 1615 Donal McMurlogh was the priest, and the church and chancel were in repair (Hore 1900-11, vol. 6, 271). The old church was pulled down c. 1820 according to John O'Donovan writing c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 225) when the present Church of Ireland church was built. There are no visible remains of the old church at ground level, apart from a fragment of a window mullion (H 0.4m) acting as a grave-marker in the graveyard that would suggest a late medieval date. The cross (WX022-022----) is on the W side of the road c. 100m to the S and Bride's Well (WX022-023-----) is c. 460m to the SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 31 June, 2012 Amended: 4 Sep. 2013
