Church in Kilmore Upper

Church

What is recorded here

Davies (1948, 99) claimed that the earliest reference to a church here dated from 885AD and that until 1454 it was no more than a parish church. In that year it became an episcopal seat perhaps translated from Slandore. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
The church in Kilmore Upper was established as a parish church by at least 885 AD and became an episcopal seat in 1454, possibly transferred from Slandore. Its early history reflects the development of ecclesiastical administration in the region.
