Church in Kilgarriff

The precise location of Kilnarath or Kilgarriff Church has not been identified. Westropp (1904-5, 452) recorded the following details about Kilnarath; 'Caeman of Cillratha, near Duntrileague (Reeves MSS., T.C.D., 1063, p. 118). "To Imelach dregingi, and so to Cillnarath, as the Saimer (Morning Star) runs from it "(Charter of Magio, 1185). This stream rises in Ballingarry parish, to the south-east of Emlygrenan. Kylneragh, 1281 (Pipe Roll, Ir.).' Fitzgerald (1953, 24-5) recorded the following details about Kilnarath or Kilgarriff; 'The church of Kilnarath was founded by St. Patrick. The river which flows near this church is called the Glenbrohane and is undoubtedly identical with the 'Gleannoneolain river' of the Mainister grant. It is a tributary of the Samair (or Morning Star). The mention of Laraglaw and Kilnarath in the grant shows that there were two seperate churches, and none one and the same as Westropp held'.
