Church in Kilclooney

Church

What is recorded here

According to Byrne (1902, 84), two disciples of St Ruadhan were ordered to remain in whatever place 'the tongues of the bells' which he gave them would sound of themselves; when they came to St Barri's church at Cill Cluain the bells rang out and St Barri 'knowing the divine will' gave them his own church there. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
The Church in Kilclooney was likely founded in the early medieval period, associated with the disciples of St Ruadhan, and dedicated to St Barri. It is significant as an example of early Christian settlement linked to bell-related foundation legends in Ireland.
