Church, Graveyard

Church

What is recorded here

Derelict mausoleum and scattered church fragments occupy a slight rise in County Carlow, preserving ogival stones and a late medieval font basin. The building collapsed into its own graveyard, forcing later people to reuse sacred material rather than erase it. What remains is not a complete church but a buried argument about continuity, visible only through broken arches and reused walls.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 16 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Present remains consist of poorly constructed and derelict mausoleum, probably incorporating parts of chancel of featureless earlier structure, including N wall. Of randomly coursed limestone on slight rise in graveyard. Architectural fragments in graveyard (CW002-007002-) include ogival window heads, jambs and arch stones, granite base and parts of late medieval basin of font.
