What is recorded here

Castle stood on an island in the River Barrow, built by the St Leger family before passing through Butler hands to the Bests. It may have hidden beside farm buildings near the church, but stone thieves stripped it for Larchfield estate work two decades ago. What remains are later walls, not the original island fortress, leaving behind a ghost of a home rather than a ruin.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown as standing on island in River Barrow on Down Survey (1655-6) map. Built by St Leger family. Subsequently passed to Butler family before passing to Bests. Probably stood on or close to farm buildings c. 200m W of church (CW002-002----). Large quantities of stone removed from here to the Larchfield estate about 20 years ago. Present walls are of later date.
