What is recorded here

Chisenbury Priory is a late seventeenth-century house whose front was renewed in the middle of the next century. A dated stone records Williams Grove's work in 1767, while the Justice Room remembers local courts that continued here until 1922.

Why it was built

The present building was created as a substantial country house in the later seventeenth century, close to the site once occupied by a small medieval religious house.

Williams Grove's initials appear with the date 1767 on the later front. People also gathered in the house's Justice Room when local court business was heard there.

How it changed

A new front added in the middle of the eighteenth century reshaped the older house. Court meetings continued in one room as late as 1922, extending its public role beyond its domestic use.

What survives

The late seventeenth-century house and its 1767 front remain, including the Justice Room. No known physical evidence survives from the religious cell founded nearby in 1112.

Chisenbury is important as a carefully dated old house with a surviving room for local justice, while its name keeps alive the memory of a vanished medieval foundation.
