Childrens Grave Yd.

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Grave Yd. holds small rectangular graves marked by beach boulders and white quartz, waiting just above the Galway foreshore. The stones still define heads, feet and sides despite rough grazing and tidal wind. Children may have been laid there before written memory, their names lost but their shape preserved in stone.
Just above foreshore on rough grazing land. An unenclosed, roughly wedge-shaped area (N-S 15.2m, E-W 30m). Numerous small set stones, mainly beach boulders, are visible, including some of white quartz. A number of rectangular graves (L c. 1m, Wth 0.4m) are present, defined by head-, foot- and sidestones. (Hardiman 1846, 120) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
