Childrens Burying Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burying Ground stands alone on a hill in flat Galway farmland, its shallow basin marked by irregular stones and a northern bank. The earth slopes gently downward, guiding the eye toward small graves that never grew into adult shapes. A pile of stones waits in the northeast corner like an unfinished gesture, preserving the sudden departures of young lives before they could leave behind much more than memory.
On a hill in otherwise level farmland. A subrectangular CBG (E-W 15.4m, NNE-SSW 12m), in fair condition, defined by a bank of earth and stone at N and by a field boundary, running E-W, at S; no enclosing element is visible at E or W. The interior slopes from NE to SW and irregularly shaped grave-markers are visible. A pile of stones occupies NE corner of the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
