Childrens Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Ground in County Donegal, Ireland, is a place where young lives ended before their time. The land may have swallowed infants during plague, childbirth or ordinary childhood illness, leaving parents no choice but to dig shallow graves at the field's edge. Such grounds were common across Ireland because churchyards rejected children who had not received baptism, pushing grief into separate soil. The site still belongs to that excluded generation, waiting for someone to walk its boundary and remember what the living refused to bury beside them.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV).
