Childrens Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Fifteen low stone mounds still mark children buried inside a Galway ringfort. They lie scattered rather than ranked, some tilting north-east and others west-east, as if placement followed love or chance instead of rule. The ground keeps its quiet without demanding belief, inviting only wonder about the small lives lost there.
Within a ringfort (GA043-088----). An unenclosed irregular area within which are at least fifteen randomly placed elongated mounds of loose stone (L c. 2m, Wth c.1m, H < 0.7m); some are aligned NNE-SSW, others WNW-ESE. No definite grave-markers were identified. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
