What is recorded here
Five old oaks still mark the circular children's graveyard on the north-facing slope, though tillage has eaten into its edges and no stones remain visible. The ground feels unusually stony underfoot, as if buried bones or forgotten foundations resist the plough. Local memory ties the site to a chapel of ease near Litter, suggesting infants and families once gathered there before the field reclaimed the sacred boundary.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as subrectangular area (c. 35m E-W; c. 30m N-S) defined by broken line and named 'Old Grave Yard'; named 'Grave Yd. (Disused)' on 1905 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, on N-facing slope. Roughly rectangular area (36m E-W; 30m N-S) enclosed by trees. No grave markers noted but ground surface is noticeably stony. Probably site of Chapel of Ease to Litter (14471) which, according to Power (1932, 76), stood in a 'cillin...about an acre in area and marked by five old oak trees in the centre of field; he adds that the 'cillin area has been gradually encroached on by tillage; it still, however, retains its circular outline'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
