Childrens Burial Ground (Disused)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

No boy, no girl, no parent, no witness. The chamber holds only the shape of the last request and the shape of the answer. That is why it feels complete.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map in SE quadrant of possible early ecclesiastical enclosure (9798). 1903 OS 6-inch map shows large enclosure removed due to reorganisation of field system; burial ground shown as irregular area and termed 'disused'. In pasture, on S-facing slope. Irregular area (34m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed by low degraded earthen bank. Interior heavily overgrown; burials marked by large uninscribed boulders. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
