Children's burial ground in Shinnagh (magunihy By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Unbaptised children were buried in a rath within John Long's land in Shinnagh, County Kerry, according to a 1940s record. The exact spot has vanished from memory, leaving only a ghostly suggestion that innocent lives still sleep beneath ordinary grass. It is a cruel reminder that love and law collided in small bodies, forcing parents to choose between church rules and natural grief.
In the 1940s it was recorded that 'unbaptised children' were buried in a rath (KE060-038----) in John Long's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). The precise location of the rath and burial ground is not known and it is possible that they are in that part of the townland which is on OS 6-inch map 68.
