Children's burial ground in Shanaghy (gallen By.)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lár na Leanabh, the children’s burial ground near Shanaghy, still carries the weight of lost young lives. A hawthorn tree stands beside the old enclosure, its base ringed by a low heap of stones and sod. Local tradition treats the tree as sacred, suggesting people once came there to honour children rather than forget them.
According to local tradition, a children’s burial ground known as ‘Lár na Leanabh’ is located at or close to an enclosure (MA071-152----). A hawthorn tree 5m to SE of the enclosure at SE is said to be a sacred tree. An oblong, sod-covered heap (5m NE–SW; 3m NW–SE; H 0.8m) of stones encircles the base of the tree.
