Children's burial ground in Killycolman

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Killycolman holds a children's burial ground so distinct it earned its own label on the 1905 OS map. The separation suggests local people believed young deaths needed a different container, a boundary drawn in soil rather than stone. That act of naming implies witness: someone watched, remembered and shaped the land to fit the loss.
Marked 'Children's Burial gd.' on the 1905 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
