Children's burial ground in Fartamore

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Low stones flank the southeast entrance of a Galway ringfort, marking a children's burial ground hidden inside the ancient bank. The quiet contrast between a warrior stronghold and infant graves suggests the fortress served ordinary life as well as defence. Maybe parents chose the ring's protection for their youngest, trusting its old boundaries to shield even the smallest dead.
Within a ringfort (GA016-052----). According to local information, this is the site of a CBG. A number of low set stones on the inner edge of the bank, flanking the entrance at SE, indicate grave-markers. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
