Children's burial ground in Carrick (templedouglas Ed)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Half a metre of earthen bank still curves through the grass at Carrick, marking the south-west edge of a circular ground where children were buried. The missing northern half has vanished into time, but the surviving rim and level interior preserve the shape of a place set apart for the smallest dead. A hidden passage may still breathe beneath the north-west rock, waiting for someone brave enough to listen for the answer.
Internal diam. c. 20m. Known as a Caldragh or Burial Ground. The site was originally a circular area. Only the SW half of an enclosing earthen bank survives to a height of .3m. The S side of the site has been raised to provide a level interior. A 'cave' or Man-made underground passage is recorded, at the NW edge, on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated in an area of rock outcrop but with good grazing and excellent views to all but the N side. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
