Children's burial ground in Ballyhale

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

No visible trace remains because a grotto replaced the small set stones that once marked the children's graves. The buried place is not lost to ignorance but hidden beneath a newer act of devotion. Memory moved the stones instead of forgetting them.
By the roadside, just N of the village of Ballyhale. According to local information, there was formerly a CBG at the site of the modern grotto. Small set stones, removed when the grotto was built c. 20 years ago, were said to mark the graves. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
