Children's Burial Ground

Half a metre of raised earth inside a double-walled ringfort at Barrysbrook, County Offaly, carries a children’s burial memory that archaeology has not confirmed but local generations have repeated without hesitation. The ridge stands above ordinary Offaly farmland, exposing the small mound to weather, distance and forgetting, yet people still point to it as a cillin rather than an unexplained bump. That gap between proof and belief is the place itself: a modest circle of soil holding names no longer spoken, waiting to be remembered instead of measured.
