Children's Burial Ground

Children's burial grounds scattered across west coast Ireland because unbaptised babies were barred from churchyards under Canon Law 1239. In County Galway alone, 480 such places remain hidden in fields, beside water, or tucked inside old ringforts. They are not forgotten; they are still spoken of in local memory as cillíní, small churches for the youngest dead.
