The public map records this plaque for Chartist Burial Site. Its recorded inscription reads: ON NOVEMBER 4TH 1879 MORE THAN TWENTY SUPPORTERS OF THE CHARTIST MOVEMENT WHICH SOUGHT TO ESTABLISH DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS FOR ALL MEN DIED IN AN EXCHANGE OF SHOTS AT THE WESTGATE HOTEL NEWPORT. TEN WERE BURIED IN THIS CHURCHYARD IN UNMARKED GRAVES.
The Chartist Burial Site marks the final resting place of ten Chartists killed during a confrontation at the Westgate Hotel in Newport in 1879; these individuals were supporters of a movement advocating for democratic reforms including universal male suffrage and secret ballots.
A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
