King Charles I of England was a monarch whose authoritarian rule and conflicts with Parliament led to the English Civil War, initiated when he raised his royal standard in Nottingham. This action precipitated a conflict that ultimately resulted in his defeat, trial for treason, and execution in 1649, marking a significant period of political upheaval in British history.
