This bronze commemorative plaque records: William Stukeley, the noted 18th century antiquary lived in the house opposite, No 9, 1743-48. The structure above was part of the house forming a bridge that spanned the road. It formed Stukeley's study and library. Stukeley claimed that King Charles I spent the last night of freedom in this house, May 1646. Recorded plaque organisation: Stamford Civic Society.

King Charles I of England was monarch during the English Civil War and was executed in 1649; William Stukeley was an 18th-century antiquary known for his studies on prehistoric monuments and claimed King Charles I spent his last night of freedom in a house now associated with Stukeley's residence.
