Island Mcteige in County Limerick held a charcoal-making site where heat and smoke transformed local wood into useful black fuel during the early medieval period. Nikolah Gilligan excavated the place, uncovering the shallow remains of that busy craft. The date 961 to 1020 suggests people travelled across water, built fires, and waited for glowing ember beds to cool before carrying heavy sacks away.
