Island Mcteige in County Limerick held three charcoal-making sites dated between 961 and 1020. Nikolah Gilligan excavated the place, revealing that people turned dense wood into hungry black powder while the island still belonged to itself. The charcoals may have smothered useful roots or fed furnaces elsewhere, yet the effort suggests the work mattered enough to repeat.
