Chapel Field

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Chapel Field is a lost burial ground on the west slope of Saggart Hill, marked only by a house called Slademore Lodge and a hidden holy water font. It belonged to St. Mary de Hogges, and human remains emerged during building work, proving the field was once sacred. The earth keeps what the surface forgot, waiting for boots, tools or rain to reveal its dead again.
Situated on the W facing slope of Saggart Hill. A house known as Slademore Lodge was identified by the OS Letters (1837) as the site of a burial ground (Herity 2001, 39). Human remains were exposed during building operations here. A Holy water font was also found at the site. This was the property of St. Mary de Hogges (Ball Vol.3, 125). There are no visible surface remains (Healy 1975, 1-19). Pre-development testing in 2003 revealed a clay-bonded structure associated with a metalled surface (03E1693).
