Chalbury Hill Fort

Archaeological place

Explorer Tom

Chalbury Hill Fort sits above the Coombe Valley near Weymouth, a low ring of earthworks with a view that makes you understand why somebody fancied the hilltop. It is no towering stone fortress: the rampart, ditch and old entrance do the talking, while the wind supplies a wildly unreliable battle soundtrack. Dorset's heritage record identifies Chalbury as an Iron Age hillfort with evidence of earlier Late Bronze Age occupation. Historic England describes a roughly D-shaped enclosure around a rocky knoll, about four and a half hectares in area, with one rampart and an outer ditch. The original entrance breaks the south-eastern side. Inside, circular hollows may be storage pits; platforms around the edge hint at life within the defences. Those are clues, not an invitation to invent a chief with a magnificent moustache. This hill belongs to a longer archaeological landscape. The protected area includes two bowl barrows within the fort, part of a Bronze Age urnfield and traces of medieval strip fields nearby. Different people left different marks, and they did not tidy the place into neat historical chapters for your convenience. Take your time with the shapes of the ground: the view across the valley is immediate, but the story takes more looking. A walking guide hosted by Dorset Council gives a route to the hillfort from Coombe Valley Road, through the smaller quarry entrance and uphill by gates. Follow the signed route and current on-site directions; the guide warns of a stile, uneven ground and mud, and says its map is not a legal rights-of-way record. Come for the hilltop, then let the old ditch win the argument about whether there is anything to see.
