What is recorded here
Three caves in County Antrim served as a nursery, a classroom and a forge during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Children likely sat in the dry dark while hammers rang elsewhere, turning stone into a complete village. The boundary between home, learning and labour disappeared inside the mountain.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as Cave system (3 caves) - "Nanny's Cave", hedge school and smithy ("Blacksmith's Cave"). Recorded period: C18TH/C19TH. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
