Cave or Covered Passage (1838).

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

The man-made underground passage in Monasterredan is in County Sligo, Ireland. The 1838 OS 6-inch map shows a rectangular structure about 20 metres northeast-southwest and 5 metres northwest-southeast in the northern half of an ecclesiastical enclosure. A low sod-covered rise contains a drystone passage, roughly 5 metres long and up to 1.5 metres wide, whose eastern wall has a blocked lintelled opening and a narrow creepway. That creepway leads to a rectangular drystone chamber about 1.5 metres north-south and 5 metres east-west that was flooded during inspection.
In the NW quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (SL046-014003-) and graveyard (SL046-014002-). A rectangular structure (c. 20m NE-SW; c. 5m NW-SE) is indicated in the N half of the enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and annotated 'Cave or Covered Passage'. A broad low sod-covered rise, gently sloping down to NNE, is evident. On the W side of this rise is an opening through a lintelled roof into a drystone-built passage (L c. 5m; max. Wth 1.5m; H 1.08m). The passage extends roughly E-W for c. 4m, then curves gently to SW for a further c. 1.5m. The SW end is constructed of a single slab. At the E end of the N wall is a lintelled opening (Wth 0.47m; H 0.61m) flanked by narrow stone jambs. This opening is blocked by earth. In the centre of the E wall is a lintelled creepway (L 0.5m E-W; Wth 0.64m; H 0.49m) leading to a rectangular drystone-built chamber (c. 1.5m N-S; c. 5m E-W) roofed with lintels and flooded at the time of inspection. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
