Pollwalter is a 726-metre limestone tube where water still cuts through Carboniferous rock, and lesser horseshoe bats hang in the dark above the place humans have kept closed. It belongs to theClancy or Glancy townland west of Cong, named for a family rather than a hero, which makes the cave sound like a room someone forgot to lock. The bats need that forgetfulness: their small bodies map the chamber by echoing off wet stone, turning a hidden Galway passage into a living instrument.
