Cave

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Kelly's Cave is a sixteen-metre limestone passage in County Mayo where carved benches and a roof skylight suggest a hermit once lived beside an underground stream. Local tradition claims a fugitive named Kelly sheltered there after the 1798 Rebellion or survived the Penal era as a highwayman, though no written proof remains. The cave hides inside a rath with no visible surface trace, waiting for someone brave enough to descend its four steps into darkness.
Located in a rath (MA031-033002-). This Man-made underground passage is shown as ‘Cave’ on the 1837-8 and 1922 OS maps in the NW quadrant of the rath interior. There is no visible surface trace. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 28 June 2018

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
