What is recorded here
Camboglanna, later called Castlesteads, stood on a high bluff above the Cambeck Valley as the twelfth fort on Hadrian's Wall. It watched the river bend and guarded an approach to the Wall with a square rampart, double gates and a single ditch. The Cohors IV Gallorum equitata and later the Cohors II Tungrorum may have marched past stone buildings, an east-west road and a bath-house below the fort. In 1791 a walled garden was laid over the site, hiding the rampart from sight while the memory of soldiers, traders and raiders stayed buried beneath the soil.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlesteads as Pit Alignment (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
