Castlerea Railway Station

Complex of railway station structures, built c.1860 by Great Southern Railways as part of the Sligo-Westport line. Three-bay two-storey signal box with pitched slate roof and red brick chimneystack. Brick to ground floor with plinth and timber boarded and glass structure to first floor accessed by cast-iron steps. Segmental-headed timber frame windows. Timber station sign to signal box. Cast-iron signal posts to platform. Random coursed water tower with yellow brick opening and cast-iron water tank to top with ladder and measure. Wheel operated timber level crossing gates with cast-iron fittings to cut stone gate piers. Cast-iron lamps to gates.

These structures form part of an interesting group of structures at Castlerea Railway Station. Socially, the railway is of the utmost importance to small towns, providing a network of travel for both people and produce.
