Castledownie

Stone Heap (modern)

What is recorded here

Castledownie is a ruined defensive site on a knife-edged ridge in Ross and Cromarty where two remaining ramparts still mark a small rectangular enclosure. Natural slopes and a shallow gully protected the spur, while people added stone and earth to control the gaps. Trees and bracken have since buried much of the work, leaving only boulders and faint lines for imagination to complete.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castledownie as Stone Heap (modern). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
