What is recorded here
Tottenhamgreen is a castle lost between the Corrock River, Shanowle and Horetown, not a point on a modern map but a gap in the land where memory stopped behaving. John Furlong held it and two hundred forty acres in 1640, then Charles Collins took four hundred seventy-eight acres in 1667 before passing them to John Tottenham of Ballyduff. The castle may still be buried under Tottenhamgreen House, built around 1700, its chambers waiting beneath parquet and plaster like a drowned voice under a singing one.
According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) there was an ‘old ruined castle’ at Ballinloskran in Horetown parish that was owned by John Furlong in 1640, together with 240 acres (Simington 1953, 87). This is thought to be Tottenhamgreen as it is described as being between the Corrock River (river of Pill), Shanowle and Horetown. A grant of 478 acres in Ballyloskan was made in 1667 to a Charles Collins, who subsequently sold it to John Tottenham of Ballyduff, Co. Waterford (Jeffrey 1979, 95). The location of the castle is not known, although it may have been where Tottenhamgreen House (WX036-055----) was built c. 1700. (Bence-Jones 1978, 274-5)

John Furlong owned the site of an old ruined castle at Ballinloskran in Horetown parish by 1640, as recorded in the Civil Survey. Its significance lies in its mention as a pre-existing structure during the 17th century, reflecting landholding patterns in the region.
