Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Toom Castle belonged to Edward Synnott in 1641, but no stones remain visible to mark his claim. The castle may have sunk into river clay, rotted into fence posts or simply never have existed beyond a ledger line. Toom keeps this absence alive because an entire residence can vanish while the townland continues unchanged.
According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) a Castle, a mill, a weir on a small stream and 100 acres at Tomnemaghtiry, which is probably Toom townland, were owned by Edward Synnott in 1641 (Simington 1953, 268-9). The castle remains unlocated. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 June, 2012
Edward Synnott owned a castle in Toom townland by 1641; its importance lies in its mention in early land surveys, reflecting ownership patterns in 17th-century Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
