Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Shantraud rises from the river near the Clare flood-gates, its foundations still visible beneath the water. Westropp saw the stones in 1892, but the castle itself has no name, no owner, no date. It is the kind of place that refuses to be known, hiding in plain sight under the current.
See attached document with details from Risteárd Ua Cróinín and Martin Breen, The Castles and Tower-houses of Co. Clare (unpublished report). Uploaded courtesy of R. Ua Cróinín and M. Breen. The location recorded here should only be considered as indicative and is based on the report by Westropp, in 1892, that its foundations ‘stood in the river near the Clare end of the flood-gates and at the canal dam.’ (Westropp 1893, 191, footnote 1) Date of upload: 16 December 2014

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
