Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle is a ghost in a map, drawn in Shrule barony during the early 1600s but never found on the living ground. It may be a forgotten tower, a broken wall, or a mistake by the cartographer, yet it resists erasure because the ink still points to it. Rathmore holds the absence rather than the stone, forcing us to imagine the people who lived inside the missing lines.
Depicted on an early 17th-century map of Shrule barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.ii.26), its precise location has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 16 October 2012
