What is recorded here

Castle in Nurney appeared on the Down Survey map of 1655-6 but vanished from the land before anyone recorded where it stood. It may have been a small defensive house for a local family or a forgotten military posting during the wars. The surveyors drew it, named it, and left it behind.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Castle recorded here in Down Survey (1655-6) map. The exact location of the castle in Nurney townland is unknown.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
