Castle, unclassified in Newcastle belongs to County Longford, Ireland. It may have been built by the Petit family in the 13th-century and was attacked and burnt by Robert the Bruce in 1315. In 1406 the annals recorded that Caisleán Nua was taken by the family of Conchobhar son of Cathal Ó Fearghail and the family of Tomás son of Cathal Ó Fearghail. A 16th-century rental book noted 20s rent for the New Castell, and an early 17th-century map of Shrule barony still points to it, though the exact spot has slipped from view.

This castle, which may have been built by the Petit family in the 13th-century (O’Conor and Parker 2010, 86), was attacked and burnt by Robert the Bruce in 1315 (Orpen 1920, vol. 4, 173-4). In 1406 the annals recorded that ‘Caisleán Nua was taken by the family of Conchobhar son of Cathal [Ó Fearghail] and the family of Tomás son of Cathal Ó Fearghail’(Ó Hinnse 1947, 183). An entry in the rental book of the earl of Kildare, in the first half of the 16th century, notes the payment of 20s rent for the ‘New Castell’ (Mac Niocaill 1992, 274). The castle is depicted on an early 17th-century map of Shrule barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.ii.26) but its precise location has not been identified.
