Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Monatray East. The name still appears in a local field called An Caisleán, but no visible ruin or exact site has been identified. What is left is a castle-shaped gap in the land: a house perhaps, a stronghold perhaps, or only a memory repeated until it became a place.
According to Power (1952, 98) there was a field called An Caisleán - the castle - at Monatray. It may be the house listed in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (WA040-012001-), but it remains unlocated.
