Litter Castle anchored the north western sector held by the O'Connors and Fitzmaurice, standing among coastal defences near the mouth of the river Shannon. Its stones have vanished, but the castle still occupies the margin where land, tide and memory collide. To imagine people watching the water from that ridge is not to invent history, but to complete the shape the name already suggests.

Litter Castle (site of). The only reference we have with regard to Litter Castle is from John F. O'Sullivan, who states: 'The north western sector was held by the O'Connors and Fitzmaurice. The main defences of their territory were a number of fortified castles located along the sea coast and the mouth of the river Shannon which included... Litter.
