Lackan is a place where an entire castle can be spoken of but never found. Christopher Ledwitch and Richard Morish owned most of the land in 1641, yet no wall, ditch or gate has emerged to show which field belonged to the castle. The Down Survey named it in 1659, and that much is certain. What is missing is not the castle but the shape of the hands that built it.

Unlocated medieval castle within the townland of Lackan, the precise location of which has not been identified. The castle is mentioned in the terrier of the 1659 Down Survey map of Lackan parish where it states that 'There is at Lacken a Castle' (NLI MS 723-4). In 1641 the largest landowner in Lackan was Christopher Ledwitch, described as an 'Irish Papist' who was the owner of 275 acres of arable land, the next largest landowner was Richard Morish, an Irish Papist who possessed 237 acres of arable land. It was suggested that the castle was located in field to S of Lackan House although there is no physical evidence to support this location. The castle location is not marked on the Down Survey maps.
