Kilfrush Castle vanished before human memory, leaving only a gap in the ground and a line in a ledger. It is not a ruin you can walk around or a hole you can point to. It is a absence with a name, repeated across centuries until the name itself became the shape.

The precise location of Kilfrush Castle within the townland has not been identified. Kilfrush Castle site described by Westropp (1906-7, 183-4) as following; '1287 J. de Carreu held a knight's fee in Kilfroys in Aney Manor under T. de Clare (C.S.P.I.). 1289 Matilda Anevil claimed dower off Kilfrush (Plea R.). 1583 Kyllfrushe C[astle]. held by Earl of Desmond (Des. R., 3b; Peyton, p. 14). 1587 The head-rent of W. Nugent, of Kilfrush, granted to Sir E. Fyton. 1604 Confirmed to Morice Hurley, of Knocklong (Pat.
