Grangebeg still hides a small castle though no wall or trench has reappeared for it. James Lord Barron of Dunboyne is named as its proprietor in 1640, and the Civil Survey of 1654-6 called it tentable. That much is clear. The castle itself has vanished into the townland, leaving behind a gap sharp enough to cut a finger.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) there is a 'small castle tentable' in Grange beg, and the proprietor in 1640 was 'James Lord Barron of Dunboyne Irish Papist' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 170). James Lord Barron of Dunboyne, an Irish Papist, held the small tentable castle in Grangebeg by 1640; its mention in the 1654–6 Civil Survey reflects its status as a minor fortified residence during the turbulent period of Confederate Ireland.
