Castle in Gortigrenane, unclassified in County Cork, Ireland, is a castle whose shape and age have not survived into clear fact. It belongs to the daunt family lands recorded after 1595, and it may have been a small stronghold, a boundary marker, or a room in a house that stopped being called a castle. The name still points to power, and power needs a shape; perhaps the field between the house and the estuary once held walls, or perhaps people remembered a castle because the land itself felt like one.

There is reference to 'a castle' in Gortigrenane from an account of the lands of Thomas Daunt, second son of the Thomas who purchased Gortigrenane in 1595 (pers. comm. D. Ó Murchadha). Though Healy (1988, 263) refers to 'the original castle of the De Cogans and Fitzgeralds' there is no historic evidence for this, nor was the field between Gortigrenene House (CO099-050----) and the estuary called 'The Castle Field' but is known as 'The Foundation Field' (pers. comm.
